HURRICANE WHO

A Sci-Fi Convention in Orlando, FL – November 2011

A Gauntlet Is Thrown

Posted by jarrodwho On October - 25 - 2008

Greetings Everyone,

So yesterday, while on my way to visit with Janet at Cricketers Arms, I was listening to the Philips Phile on 104.1 WTKS. On this show, Tuddle calls in and gives a Daily NASCAR update. Towards the end of his segment, Jim Philips asked Tuddle if he was going to the Annual MonsterWeen Event dressed as Doctor Who. Tudds responded that he would not be going dressed as the good Doctor, as he was coming to the Hurricane Party in that guise. (So much for the surprise!!)

The following minutes were filled by various discussions on peoples favorite monsters were. Then Jim Philips told Tuddle that he had been “watching Doctor Who since before you were born!” Jim then proceeded to ask Tuddle: “How Long was the Rugby Scarf worn by the First Doctor who?”

If you are currently scratching your heads in confusion, don’t worry!! For what it is worth, “NewWho” fan Tuddle was as well.

"One Day, I Shall Come Back....."

As you can tell from the above picture taken from “The Dalek Invasion of Earth”, Hartnell was not a very avid scarf wearer during his time as The Doctor. There are only two instances that I am aware of him wearing a scarf throughout the entirety of his run. One of those instances was his appearance in the junkyard at the beginning of “An Unearthly Child”.

Now according to Jim Philips, the Rugby scarf worn by the First Doctor was five feet long. I have no merrit to question that fact if he is referring to the scarf pictured above, which was worn maybe twice throughout the course of Hartnell’s run.

Tuddle assumed, as did most Who fans listening, that Phillips was referring to the most Famous Doctor Who Scarf of them all (Sorry Toby)…. the one worn by Tom Baker during his run as the Fourth Doctor.

Now the scarf worn by Tom varied in length from 13feet to 21feet long depending on the story, so Jim could not possibly have mistaken the length of this one… Could he?? I mean.. when someone asks you about a scarf worn by the Original Doctor Who… What do You think of???

Following Jim’s taunting of Tuddle with the answer to this baffling scarf conundrum, Mr Philips made a comment that did not pass by my ears unheard. He said to Tuddle that “I am going to challenge your (convention) chair at the convention next year.” Challenge the Chair… at the convention… in matters of Doctor Who trivia??? Why that would be….. ME!!!

I picked up my phone, called into the show and Accepted his Challenge Live On Air. At this point Mr Philips started back peddling.. asking if he could send in a proxy or someone else in his place!!! I say no…

The Gauntlet has been thrown… and I have responded in kind. As the Convention Chair, I am sure that I could find a suitable place in programming over the weekend that would match both of our schedules quite nicely…

  1. jmgatsby Said,

Hey Jarrod, I think they should broadcast it live from the convention just so no “post-production” could be done to cover the evidence! I’m looking for that show clip on the WTKS site, when I find it I’ll post it here in the feed as evidence for all to hear. Cheers – Janet

That should be interesting….a Challenge to the Chair….Love how cocky people can get when they think their Bluff won’t be called…..
I am sure that in a few years my Stepdaughter will be the one to challenge on Current WHO trivia….she’s becoming quite obsessed……
